When to use Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)
Use an FCE when physical work capacity must be quantified for return-to-work or vocational opinion purposes.
When to use Independent Medical Examination (IME)
Use an IME when diagnostic, causation, or prognosis questions need physician-level opinion, often on behalf of the defense.
Where they overlap
Both examine the claimant. They answer different questions: FCE quantifies physical capacity; IME addresses medical questions. In catastrophic cases, both are often performed. KWVRS conducts IMEs for New York and New Jersey matters only.
